Esta fecha se eligió en homenaje al padre de la educación nacional: Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. Es que el 21 de septiembre de 1888 llegaron a Buenos Aires, procedentes de Asunción, sus restos.

Sarmiento había muerto en la capital paraguaya. En su larga y multifacética carrera como político, escritor y docente fue una pieza fundamental en la educación pública argentina y su progreso tanto científico como cultural.
