Argentina celebra hoy el Día del Cine Nacional en recuerdo del 23 de mayo de 1909, fecha en que se estrenó, en el Teatro Ateneo, la primera película argumental argentina.

El film, dirigido por Mario Gallo, se estrenó un día como hoy en el teatro Ateneo de Buenos Aires, más precisamente el 23 de mayo de 1909. La película original estaba dividida en quince cuadros, cada uno de ellos precedido por un cartel, de los cuales se conservan sólo nueve. En el film se relatan los sucesos que tuvieron lugar en Buenos Aires en la Semana de Mayo, entre el 22 y el 25 de mayo de 1810.
